David Callaway
Religious Freedom Specialist
David Callaway is the religious freedom specialist for the Freedom Forum, where he guides the organization’s work on religious liberty, religious literacy and democratic pluralism amid changing attitudes toward faith in the United States. His specialties include the role of religion in public schools, particularly the religious freedom rights of teachers and students, as well as the importance of teaching religion in academically rigorous and constitutionally appropriate ways. Callaway has co-authored a variety of religious literacy resources, including “The Study of Religion in the Social Studies Curriculum” by the National Council for the Social Studies and a chapter in “Teaching about Religion in the Social Studies Classroom.” He previously oversaw the Freedom Forum’s Georgia Rights, Responsibility, Respect Project, an initiative that trained thousands of teachers and administrators on navigating religion in schools. Prior to that, he served as director of education at Center Point, a nonprofit in Georgia, where he developed curricula and taught public school students on the academic study of religion.
