About Freedom Forum

Our Mission

Our mission is to foster First Amendment freedoms for all.

Our Vision

Our vision is an America where everyone knows, values and defends the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition. The First Amendment protects everyone's right to express themselves freely and join with others to make their views known. This diversity of voices and perspectives strengthens our nation.

Yet most Americans can't name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment.

We believe that educating all people about these fundamental freedoms — and inspiring people to use them — is the best way to prevent the government from limiting these rights and to protect the First Amendment for future generations.

We Educate, Engage and Inspire

Freedom Forum is one of the nation's leading voices on the First Amendment and the five freedoms it protects. We strive to ensure that a diversity of voices and viewpoints are represented in our work. Each year, we reach millions of Americans:

  • We educate students, teachers, journalists, community leaders and individuals from all walks of life about the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.
  • We engage our audience in today's vital conversations about First Amendment freedoms with expert analysis, digital storytelling and in-person events.
  • We inspire people to use their First Amendment freedoms, and we celebrate champions of free expression with festivals, traveling exhibits, programs, performances, award ceremonies, and digital campaigns and initiatives.

We Need You

It's up to all of us to protect our First Amendment freedoms. Here's how you can get involved:

Our Commitment to an Inclusive Workplace

Diversity is an integral part of Freedom Forum's history, and it is vital to our future. As chair and CEO of Gannett, the largest U.S. newspaper company, our founder Al Neuharth championed the hiring and promotion of people from different backgrounds to help ensure Gannett newsrooms reflected the nation.

His legacy lives on at Freedom Forum, where we are committed to creating an environment where all are respected, valued, encouraged and supported.

We believe everyone's experience and perspective matters. Our staff is committed to promoting awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diversity throughout our organization and fostering an inclusive culture of belonging.

Our Foundation

Freedom Forum is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to fostering First Amendment freedoms for all.

We are supported in part by contributions and grants. Freedom Forum leadership determines the content of our work independent of outside funders.
