Welcome to the First Amendment Academy: a dynamic learning hub where students, educators and lifelong learners can explore resources about core First Amendment concepts.
The First Amendment isn’t just a history lesson — it’s a daily tool to use on public university campuses and in life. It gives you the right to believe freely, speak up, explore new ideas, gather together, challenge the status quo and push for change.
It protects your voice — and everyone else’s, too. You won’t always agree with what you hear. That’s part of the deal. Freedom means space for all perspectives — not just the ones you like.
Know your rights
These First Amendment student guides, videos, quizzes and articles can help you better understand your rights and the limits to these freedoms.
The First Amendment 101
Learn the five freedoms. Live them. Don’t take them for granted.
Free Speech = Free Expression
Speak up. Speak out. But know the limitations of free speech.
Your Right to Protest
Stand up for what you believe. You’re free to protest for your cause. But your public university can limit when, where and how you support your cause to avoid disrupting campus activities.

Find your voice
Finding your voice — and feeling empowered to use it — helps protect your First Amendment rights.
You already make expressive choices: speaking up in class, choosing what you listen to or watch, joining the school paper or radio station, posting on social media, attending a rally or writing a letter to the administration asking for change — all brought to you by the First Amendment.
Knowing your freedoms — religion, speech, press, assembly and petition — and recognizing how they show up in your life ensures you can stand up for them when they’re at risk.
Take the 1A Pledge
The First Amendment belongs to all of us. And it’s up to all of us to make sure it stays that way. You can do your part by celebrating these freedoms in your own life and defending them for others. Take the 1A pledge and be a champion for the First Amendment.
Put your freedoms to use
College is the perfect place to start using your First Amendment freedoms: speak up, rally your peers, write, lead. Your First Amendment rights aren’t just a history lesson — your rights are your toolkit for shaping the future. Start now.
