About the Academy
It’s a free, dynamic educational platform designed to deepen public understanding of the First Amendment and its five core freedoms: religion, speech, press, assembly and petition. This project is a collaboration between Freedom Forum — a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to fostering First Amendment freedoms for all; Arizona State University — a global leader in online education and civic learning; and NEWSWELL — an organization committed to revitalizing local journalism to support democracy. The Academy offers interactive, accessible courses and quizzes to explore how First Amendment rights affect our daily lives.
The crisis in civic understanding has never been more urgent — as the most recent Freedom Forum survey showed. Prior to last November’s election, 56% of those responding to the survey said concerns over the First Amendment would impact how they voted. Another point of concern, according to the survey: the younger the respondent, the less affinity they have for the First Amendment.
