While support for the separation of church and state remains strong among most Americans, another survey found one in five believe the government should stop enforcing this bedrock value guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Join Freedom Forum Fellow Asma Uddin, a religious liberty lawyer, scholar and author, and Jim Eaton, lead pastor at Mosaic Church in Frederick, Md., as they engage in dialogue about the First Amendment, religious nationalism and the challenges facing Americans in a diverse democracy.

See why dialogue is crucial and how the First Amendment is key to protecting believers and nonbelievers alike from government interference in expressions of their deepest beliefs.

This event is part of the National Day of Dialogue, a series of events and resources from a coalition of organizations inviting all Americans to change our current state of division and polarization by crossing lines of difference into real dialogue.

This program will premiere Jan. 5, 2022, at 3 p.m. Eastern on our YouTube channel.

“The First Amendment: Where America Stands” surveyed more than 3,000 Americans across geographic, demographic and ideological lines on their attitudes about the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.

First Five Now is a Freedom Forum conversation that explores topical issues and features current newsmakers who are using the five freedoms of the First Amendment to guide their work.

Made possible by generous support from the Andrew and Julie Klingenstein Family Fund and from donations to the Charles C. Haynes Fund.
