Rise Up: LGBTQ Rights and Religious Freedom

A police raid of New York’s Stonewall Inn in 1969 sparked protests that inspired the modern gay liberation movement. The “Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement” exhibit explores what happened at Stonewall and how it gave rise to a 50-year fight for civil rights for LGBTQ Americans.

Impactful voices from the faith, LGBTQ advocacy, legal and academic communities discuss the book “Religious Freedom, LGBT Rights, and the Prospects for Common Ground."

Panelists include:

  • William N. Eskridge Jr., the John A. Garver Professor of Jurisprudence at Yale Law School and co-editor of the book.
  • Robin Fretwell Wilson, the Roger and Stephany JoslinProfessor of Law at the University of Illinois’ College of Law and co-editor of the book.
  • Holly Hollman, general counsel of Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and book contributor.
  • Jonathan Rauch, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a contributing editor of The Atlantic.
  • Kristina Arriaga, president of the Oxford Society for Law and Religion, moderates the conversation.
