First Five Now: The Presidents vs. the Press
September 10, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm EDTFree
Scholar and author Harold Holzer talks about his new book, “The Presidents vs. the Press: The Endless Battle Between the White House and the Media from the Founding Fathers to Fake News.”
The book provides a sweeping history of relations between journalists and the presidency and offers an authoritative account of American presidents’ attacks on freedom of the press — one of the five freedoms of the First Amendment — from George Washington to Donald Trump.
“The Presidents vs. the Press” chronicles the disputes and distrust between these core American institutions, revealing that the essence of their confrontations is built into the fabric of the nation.
Holzer is one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. He was appointed chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission by President Bill Clinton and awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush.
He currently serves as director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, City University of New York.
“First Five Now” is a Freedom Forum conversation that explores topical issues and features current newsmakers who are using the five freedoms of the First Amendment to guide their work.
