First Five Now: From Freedom Riders to Black Lives Matter
July 16, 2020 @ 2:00 pm EDT
Former Freedom Rider Ernest “Rip” Patton and Philomena Wankenge, a Black Lives Matter activist and co-founder of Freedom Fighters D.C., discuss the evolution of civil rights activism and their roles in the movement.
The program also features Aaron Morrison of the Associated Press, who has covered the recent protests over racial inequality, and Deborah Barfield Berry of USA TODAY, who covers a range of issues with a focus on civil rights and voting rights.
The conversation, moderated by political organizer Dani Neuharth-Keusch, was recorded in June 2020 during the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference which each year hosts 51 rising high school seniors from across the country who are pursuing a career in journalism.
“First Five Now” is a Freedom Forum conversation that explores topical issues and features current newsmakers who are using the five freedoms of the First Amendment to guide their work.
