First Five Live: One Nurse’s Protest
May 7, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm EDTFree
Lauren Leander, an Arizona nurse who works in a coronavirus intensive care unit, discusses her recent silent counterprotest in support of healthcare workers and patients at a rally to reopen Arizona.
On April 20, hundreds of people gathered at the state Capitol in Phoenix to protest Gov. Doug Ducey’s stay-at-home order enacted to stop the spread of the virus.
Leander, wearing a face mask and her hospital scrubs, stood with her arms crossed in defiance of the protesters. Her silent message supported the importance of staying home in the name of public safety.
Images of Leander soon spread quickly on news web sites and TV broadcasts.
“First Five Live” is a Freedom Forum conversation series featuring activists and influencers sharing their stories about how they have exercised the five freedoms of the First Amendment – religion, speech, press, assembly and petition – to ignite change.
