Carl Rowan tribute set for Oct. 3

ARLINGTON, Va. — Family, friends and colleagues of journalist Carl T. Rowan will attend a tribute to Rowan's life and legacy on Oct. 3. Rowan died on Sept. 23.

The tribute will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Lincoln Ballroom on the Concourse Level of the Washington Hilton and Towers, 1919 Connecticut Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.

Among those who will offer tributes to Rowan:

Allen H. Neuharth, founder, USA TODAY and The Freedom Forum

Charles L. Overby, chairman and chief executive officer, The Freedom Forum

Milton Coleman, deputy managing editor, The Washington Post

Gordon Peterson, anchor, WUSA-TV, Channel 9

Katina M. Byrd, M.D., physician and the first Project Excellence Scholarship winner

Carl T. Rowan Jr., attorney and son of Carl and Vivien Rowan

Jeffrey Rowan, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and son of Carl and Vivien Rowan

Rowan was a best-selling author, syndicated columnist, television commentator and ambassador. He was a trustee of The Freedom Forum and its affiliated program, the First Amendment Center, since 1993. He was a director of Gannett Co. from 1990 to 1996.

In 1987, he founded Project Excellence, a program designed to encourage black high school students to excel in the written and spoken use of the English language. Each year Project Excellence provides scholarship funds to top-performing black high school students from the greater Washington, D.C., area.

The same day as the Rowan tribute, also at the Washington Hilton, the eighth annual Project Excellence/Freedom Forum Scholarship Day will take place. It runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall on the Concourse Level. This annual college fair matches hundreds of outstanding local black high school seniors with leading colleges and universities offering on-the-spot acceptances and financial-aid packages.
