ARLINGTON, Va. The Freedom Forum is about to unveil a new
recruiting video to help attract young people to careers in the nation's
newspaper newsrooms.
"What's the Story?", produced by The Freedom Forum, will premiere at
the annual meeting of the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME) in San
Antonio, Texas, during a breakfast session on Friday morning, Oct. 20.
Aimed at high school juniors and seniors, the 11-minute video features
a diverse group of young journalists talking about their careers as reporters,
editors, photojournalists and graphics artists and describing the satisfaction
they experience in their work.
"Newspapers, to our knowledge, have never had a recruiting tool like
this video, which conveys so vividly the excitement of working in a newsroom.
We hope that the enthusiasm of the young journalists in this video will capture
the imaginations of other talented young people," said
Charles L. Overby, chairman and chief
executive officer of The Freedom Forum. "The journalism profession needs them,
and communities need them in their newsrooms, adding fresh voices and
perspectives to news reporting and editing."
"We plan to make the video available far and wide. It's free to
anyone in a position to help steer accomplished young people toward a career in
journalism," said Mary Kay Blake, vice president/partnerships and initiatives
at The Freedom Forum.
Copies of the video with accompanying material on newspaper
careers will be mailed to members of APME and the American Society of
Newspaper Editors, to college and university journalism deans and recruitment
officers and to high school guidance counselors. Copies for use in recruiting
efforts can be obtained from Monica Thom at 703/284-3919 or
video@freedomforum.org.
