Welcome to journalism.
More than 130 high school and college students are being introduced to journalism this week during the seventh annual Native American Journalism Career Conference at the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Thirty-eight mentors – some of them Native American journalists – are working side-by-side with the students as they learn about reporting, writing and photography. Besides listening to speakers and working with experienced journalists, students get to try it for themselves. They are assigned to write stories and take photographs.
Funded by the Freedom Forum, the conference is co-sponsored by the South Dakota Newspaper Association, the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, Native American Journalists Association and the journalism programs at South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota.
