A free one-day business journalism workshop on "The Craft of Business Writing" will be held on May 1, 2006, in Vermillion, S.D. It is open to working journalists, students and teachers who want to improve their writing skills in the field of business.

The workshop starts with sign-in and breakfast at 8 a.m. and adjourns at 4:15 p.m.

The "Craft of Business Writing" program covers critical areas such as how to better explain financial terms, use a compelling narrative style, develop story ideas and write effective profiles of companies and executives.

The workshop is sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va., and hosted by the Freedom Forum's Al Neuharth Media Center at the University of South Dakota.

"More than 3,000 journalists nationwide have attended Reynolds Center at API workshops, all seeking to improve their skills," said Andrew Leckey, director of the Reynolds Center at API. "In our evaluations we found strong interest in a program that focused specifically on writing about business."

The Reynolds Center at API is funded by a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation in Las Vegas, Nev.

Registration information and other details are available on the Reynolds Center Web site.

Do not register unless you have been given authorization by your editor to do so. Because Reynolds Center workshops often are oversubscribed, no-shows keep potential registrants from attending and waste food purchased for morning and lunch meals. Registration will close at noon on April 24, 2006.
