3 to 5 p.m.: Registration.
5 to 6:

Orientation meeting for conference faculty and organizers. Welcome and introductions by Arnold Garson. Orientation and basic training by Mary Arnold.

6:30 to 9:30:

Buffet dinner, opening program and activities for all conference participants at Crazy Horse Memorial.
6:30 to 6:45:

Welcome by Arnold Garson and opening prayer by Charlie Fast Horse.

6:45 to 7:30: Dinner.
7:30 to 8:30: Open, welcome and introductions of staff and mentors by Arnold Garson. Overview of curriculum and program by Mary Arnold. Introduction of Al Neuharth by Jack Marsh. Presentation by Al Neuharth, followed by Q&A with audience.
8:30 to 9:30: "NewsMania" quiz game hosted by Rich Foster and Barbara McCormack of the Newseum.
Wednesday, April 20
7:30 to 8:30 a.m.:

Breakfast. Mary Arnold explains mentor groups and how they are organized.
8:40 to 9:15:

"Why we are here? Why Journalism?" By Ron His Horse is Thunder.

9:15 to 9:30:

American Indian Journalism Institute orientation video. Introduction by Arnold Garson.
9:30 to 9:40: Break
9:40 to 10:15:

Opportunities in journalism. Panel discussion of options in education, training programs, financial help, practical experience, internships and career placement. Moderated by Denny McAuliffe.
10:15 to 11: Three nuts-and-bolts skills workshops held concurrently.
Reporting I. Primarily for high school students. An introduction to basics of reporting, interviewing and journalistic writing. Coordinated by Ray Chavez, joined by other mentors of beginning reporting students.
Reporting II. Primarily for veteran conference attendees, college students and others with some experience. A refresher on fundamentals of good reporting, interviewing and journalistic writing. Coordinated by Denny McAuliffe, joined by other mentors of advanced reporting students.
Photojournalism and graphics. An introduction and refresher on the fundamentals of storytelling through photography and news graphics. Coordinated by Val Hoeppner, joined by photojournalism and graphics mentors.
11 to 12:30 p.m.: Mentor groups meet separately. Pursue assignments.
11 to noon:

Teacher/adviser breakout: "What Works," a panel discussion. Led by Professor Doris Giago.
12:30 to 1:15:

Luncheon.
1:15 to 1:35:

Crazy Horse orientation film "Dynamite & Dreams." After the film, announcement of mountain blast and arrangements for trip up the mountain.
1:45:

Mountain blast. Ruth Ziolkowski and Jack Marsh announce countdown. Viewed from outside veranda between Laughing Water Restaurant and the Orientation Center.
1:50 to 2:30:

Trip up the mountain and group photo on top.

2:30 to 3:15:

Press conference with Ruth Ziolkowski. Moderated by Jack Marsh, joined by other professionals. Students ask questions from audience.
3:30 to 6:

Mentor groups resume work on assignments.
6 to 6:45:

Dinner.
6:45 to 8:

Mentor groups resume work on assignments.
7:30 to 10:30:

Social time. Dessert buffet and DJ.

6:45 to 8:

Teacher/adviser breakout: "Advisers Roundtable" moderated by Doris Giago.

Thursday, April 21

Mentor groups resume. Deadline approaches. Writing mentor groups finish assignments. Photography and graphics mentor groups finish assignments and edit work.
8:30 to 9:30:

Teacher/adviser breakout: "Conference Critique Session" moderated by Arnold Garson and Doris Giago.
10 to 10:30:

First Amendment documentary titled "The First Freedom."

10:30 to 11:

Success stories among young role models. Students and young journalists share why they pursued journalism and their experiences so far. Moderated by Katie Oyan.
11 to 11:10:

Presentation of Crazy Horse Memorial Journalism Scholarships by Jadwiga Ziolkowski and representatives of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.

11:10 to 11:30:

"How and Why Indian Journalists Make a Difference." By Ron Walters.

11:40 to 1 p.m.: Luncheon and closing program. Arnold Garson presides. Presentation of certificates to students and their teachers. Special presentation by Jack Marsh, Ron Walters and Doris Giago at end of luncheon. Closing prayer by Rev. Marrles Moore.
