A look at Freedom Forum events in a UNITY 2004 photo gallery.
More than 8,000 people came together for UNITY 2004, the largest gathering of journalists of color, and the Freedom Forum was there with a special event and activities.
About 250 participants in Freedom Forum programs, editors and friends attended a “Celebration of Partners in Diversity” reception, dinner and program Aug. 5 at the National Press Club. During a reception, editors heard from Freedom Forum President Peter Prichard that more than 1,000 journalists of color have been placed in internships and full-time jobs at daily newspapers through Freedom Forum programs since 1991. Participants and guests strolled among class photos and viewed individuals’ work. During dinner, 10 “moments of inspiration” were shared, including one by Times-Picayune Reporter and Chips Quinn Scholar Maria Montoya, who told the group, “Our ability to have such a positive impact on lives is a gift we share as journalists, one we should never take for granted.”
Throughout the convention, students from the Diversity Institute reported and wrote stories about convention news and events. They covered speeches by President George W. Bush, Sen. John Kerry and Secretary of State Colin Powell and reported on convention volunteers and mentors as part of their training to become journalists.
