Brentwood rejects housing development proposal

Brentwood Board of Commissioners voted against an ordinance Monday night that would have allowed construction of a housing development on 213 acres of land near Smyrna Road.

Heated debate began when members of the community spoke against the proposal. The housing development proposal would have required the construction of a permanent road that would run through the development. Several residents voiced concern for the traffic that would be created by a new road.

"Congestion of traffic would be dumping in front of my house," said Dean Weiland, a Jones Parkway resident.

Another resident, Tom Feeney, said that traffic from Davidson County to Cool Springs in eastern Williamson County would cause a funnel effect that would result in congestion.

"Brentwood, Williamson, Nashville and Tennessee are growing," Commissioner Bob Higgs said.

Rezoning certain land will be necessary, and people need to be open to it happening, said Higgs, who moved that the motion pass.

The motion failed 3-1, with one commissioner absent.

Residents said Monday's action would just delay the inevitable.

"The city is going to rezone anyway," Weiland said after the meeting. "I just hope that they develop the property the right way."
