Political scientists promotes globalization

Globalization, the practice of countries working together to improve economic development, offers both moral and monetary benefits, a political scientist told about 20 students at Belmont University on Friday.

"Globalization is the most important issue today," said Nigel Ashford, who works for the Institute of Humane Studies in Arlington, Va. "If globalization is rejected, it leads to death, illness and poverty."

Ashford said the globalization movement promotes free trade in economics, open dialogue about human rights and exposure to other cultures.

He said Americans often fear jobs are being exported overseas, but the process allows other countries to produce goods at a cheaper price. That, he said, can benefit Americans in the long run because consumers can then purchase the goods at more affordable rates.

"Globalization leads to prosperity through specialization of labor," Ashford said.
