Guadalupe (Wally) Rendňn

Dear Diversity Institute,

I know that I don’t have to tell you that notes like these are a good shot in the arm when, as a new reporter, you are sitting and wondering if what you are doing is OK.

I thought I would share this with you to let you know that what you are doing is great. All of us should be proud of the quality reporters that you are developing in a mere 12 weeks.

“Hi Wally,

“Please know you’re doing a wonderful job as a reporter and writer. You bring a new and important vision to the newsroom, all while learning a new skill, developing a new section and getting to know new people.

“Most people come to a daily newspaper with at least two years of experience at other newspapers. You had 12 weeks of training and are still holding your own in the quality of stories you are turning in.

“Thank you for your effort and insight. Truly, it is exceptional.”

“Dustin (Block)” (Block is assistant city editor, The Journal Times, Racine, Wis.)

Thank you for your dedication to diversifying newsrooms across the country. Please share this with anyone who may be wondering if this program works.

Guadalupe (Wally) Rendňn, a graduate of the third Diversity Institute class, is a reporter at The Journal Times in Racine, Wis.
