Dear Diversity Institute,
I thought I would drop you a line and let you know that I started work yesterday and how it went.
Yesterday was crazy at the South Bend ( Ind.) Tribune. We had a bad storm here. When I arrived my editor told me to hit the streets and talk to residents about the big storm and how power losses and other problems were affecting them.
The storm left many people without electricity and water. Many trees were uprooted.
I hit the streets with pad in hand and spoke to a number of folks about the damage to their homes and yards.
Those spot-news assignments at the Diversity Institute sure paid off. You can read my first story on the Tribune's Web site.
I felt good about my ability to write a good, clean story.
May Lee Johnson, graduate of the third Diversity Institute class, is a reporter at the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune.
