Hit-and-run driver still at-large

Metro Police are still trying to identify the driver of a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on July 17.

Donald L. Powers, 58, who died July 25 from injuries sustained in the incident, was struck by another vehicle while driving his Maroon 1990 Oldsmobile van on Gallatin Road near Straightway Avenue, investigators say.

They have not been able to confirm claims by witnesses that the driver who hit Powers might have been driving a Jeep pickup truck.

Police say that the vehicle involved should have had damage to the right front-end headlight.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Metro Police Crash Investigation Unit at 862-7738.

Suspect arrested in Wal-Mart molestation

Metro Police said Thursday that they are searching for clues to determine if a man arrested for molesting a young boy in a Wal-Mart store might have victimized other children.

They are asking the public for help.

Christopher Lee Gibson, 21, was arrested July 21 on a charge of aggravated sexual battery of a 7-year-old boy at Wal-Mart on North Gallatin Pike.

Witnesses told police that Gibson, who frequently entered the store riding one of the store’s electric shopping scooters for the disabled, made his way to the video section on July 4. He was observed inappropriately touching the boy.

After questioning, Gibson admitted to detectives that he had fondled the boy.

Metro Police say because this is a child molestation case they are asking the public if it has information that might link Gibson to similar incidents.

Information can be directed to the police department’s Youth Division at 862-7417.
