Dear Diversity Institute:
Since starting as a reporter at The Tennessean, I have been able to tell the stories of my community from my perspective. I’ve learned that no matter what the story may be, always remember to do your best work because you never know who might read it.
A few weeks ago, I introduced Tennessean readers to a grandmother and granddaughter who recently graduated from cosmetology school together. I didn’t expect the story to be read by people living outside of Davidson County (Tenn). Boy, was I wrong. I received a call from the director at the cosmetology school. Someone at CBS in New York had read my story and was interested in featuring the two graduates on the CBS Morning Show.
Not only was I responsible for sharing this interesting story with readers of The Tennessean, but with the nationwide viewers of the morning show as well.
Nancy DeVille, a graduate of the second Diversity Institute class, is a reporter at The Tennessean in Nashville.
