LIVINGSTON, Mont. Park High School Principal Woody Jundt says Rolling Stone Magazine promotes violence, immoral sex and use of illegal drugs and should be banned from the school library.
"If parents want their child to read Rolling Stone they can go buy it," he said. "I don't think taxpayers should spend money on this."
He said the school board's policies oppose promoting drug, alcohol and tobacco use in any way. "Society has to draw the line, and I'm a line drawer."
Jundt approved the subscription purchase last year but said he didn't read the magazine until this summer, after a school employee voiced concerns about its content.
He said if the libarary committee doesn't approve his request at its Sept. 12 meeting, the issue will be brought before the school board.
"It promotes phone sex, drug use, promiscuity and heavy violence," Jundt said. "I object to the majority of the content. The entire classified section is for phone sex. The 'Letters to the Editor' use an extreme amount of profanity."
Despite questions of free speech and censorship, Jundt said he believes parents are supportive and would be disappointed "if the principal does not take a stand for the difference between right and wrong."
