Editors: Diane Tinsley was the graphic artist in the Diversity Institute's 2002 inaugural class.

According to Freedom Forum Diversity Institute Executive Director Wanda Lloyd, Tinsley "labored long and hard in the back of the newsroom, working magic on the Mac, learning how to produce maps, charts and graphics."

Working with Diversity Institute instructor Ray Wong, Tinsley contributed to most of the reporting and writing exercises with her colleagues.

In addition to illustrating the stories of her colleagues, Tinsley spent several days working on the graphics desk at The Tenneessean in Nashville in a mini-internship. Some of her work appeared in the newspaper.

At the newspaper, she worked under the mentorship and direction of Tennessean artist Kent Travis.

"A few years ago Diane went back to school to get an associates degree in graphics," said Lloyd.

"After 20 years as a secretary in the production department of The Record in Hackensack, N.J., she returns to that newspaper as a graphic artist."
