Zoo officials hope event gets chilly reception

Visitors to the Nashville Zoo on July 20 will receive free samples of ICEE’s and ice cream as the zoo celebrates Ice Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While people are enjoying their ice treats, the animals will get to enjoy some of their own.

The otters will swim through rings made of ice.

Other animals will receive ice balls filled with frozen fruit juice or their favorite foods frozen in blocks of ice.

"It’s just another way to entice people out on a hot summer day,” said Jim Bartoo, marketing and public relations director at the zoo.

He said zoo officials hope to see at least 3,000 people attend the event. About 2,500 to 3,000 people visit the zoo on a normal Saturday, he said.

Yvonne Richards, 36, of Nashville was at the zoo with her family about a week before the event was scheduled to take place but said she will probably come back again for Ice Day.

“We like to come whenever there’s something different at the zoo,” she said. “We usually go to the zoo about nine or 10 times a year.”

Several ice sculptures will be placed around zoo grounds for guests to see. Some weigh more than 300 pounds and resemble many of the animals on display at the zoo.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 3 to 12 and seniors over 65. Children under 3 and zoo members get in free. Parking is $2.
