The Diversity Institute Fellows have taken part in several panel discussions on various aspects of newspaper journalism since the session opened in June.
Photojournalist-in-training Shiloh Crawford III has trained his lens on the action to help cover the conversations.
On June 17, a panel on successful beat reporting featured six reporters with extensive experience talking about how they organize and cover their beats:

Orage Quarles III, publisher of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., led a spirited exploration of the realities of advertising, subscriptions and customer service at daily newspapers.
But Quarles, who also is immediate past president of the Newspaper Association of America, didn’t confine his remarks to newspapers as businesses.

“At the end of the day … when you get discouraged ... that’s when I ask you to stop and think, why are you doing this? Why are you all changing your careers to go into reporting?" Quarles said.
“I hope you do it because you think it’s a calling. ... You don’t do it for the money. If that’s your motivation I’d tell you right now you’d better get out.
"You do this because you see a problem in your community and you think you can fix that problem," Quarles observed. "And if you do it well ... the money will come down the road as you move to bigger and better things.”
Editorial writing is another important aspect of the work of a daily newspaper.
