A new online newspaper aimed at preparing Native American students for journalism careers is expected to debut this month.
As reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Reznet is the brainchild of Denny McAuliffe, a former Freedom Forum Traveling Diversity Fellow and contributor to the Freedom Forum's American Indian Journalism Institute. Twenty students from tribal colleges will be paid $50 a story, or up to $200 a month, to cover their communities or schools.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is providing $250,000 over two years for the Reznet program, which also will give student writers college credit for their work. The stories and photos will be posted at www.reznetnews.org, a new Internet site that will be maintained by the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education in Oakland, Calif.
Reznet "is intended to be the school newspaper for these tribal colleges without a newspaper," said McAuliffe, a journalist in residence at the University of Montana. For more information, contact McAuliffe at 406/243-2191, or e-mail him at mcauliff@selway.umt.edu.
