New campus sources for journalism talent

Newspaper editors, especially those in smaller markets, often lament that they cannot find qualified journalists of color for internships and entry-level jobs.

But a significant number of students of color are eager to start newspaper careers. Many are at colleges with limited career-advisement resources and do not know how to take the first steps toward a journalism career. Others are in college programs not traditionally associated with writing and reporting and thus invisible to newspapers recruiting only at colleges with accredited journalism departments.

To help newspaper editors better identify potential journalists of color, the Freedom Forum created a searchable database that can point editors to a rich array of resources at colleges, universities and junior colleges across the country.
