The conference is a workshop that introduces American Indian high school and tribal college students to the possibilities of a journalism career.
The conference is funded by the Freedom Forum Neuharth Center at the University of South Dakota and conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Neuharth Center, the South Dakota Newspaper Association and the journalism programs at the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University.
A faculty of Native American journalists from across the country works with students as mentors and produces a conference publication.
At the 2002 conference held in April, 80 students from five states participated, along with 20 school advisers.
The 2003 conference will take place April 22-24.
