Jack Hurley
Jack Hurley

Jack Hurley is senior vice president of broadcasting for both the Freedom Forum and Newseum. He also serves as a deputy director of the Newseum. Hurley oversees the production, editorial, technical and financial operations of multiple groups.

  • Broadcasting — provides video productions, audiovisual support, engineering/design/installation and systems services for the Freedom Forum headquarters in Washington, D.C., including the Newseum. The group also provides production, technical and programmatic support for the First Amendment Center and Diversity Institute in Nashville, Tenn., the Al Neuharth Media Center at the University of South Dakota and the Overby Center at the University of Mississippi.


  • Newseum Productions — produced more than 130 films, videos, multimedia and interactive experiences for the Newseum, the interactive museum of news in Washington, D.C. The Newseum opened on Pennsylvania Avenue on April 11, 2008. An overview of the Newseum is available at www.newseum.org


  • Technology — provides engineering research, technical design, installation and technical operations services to the Newseum, Freedom Forum and its operating units at the First Amendment, Neuharth and Overby centers. The technology group managed the technical infrastructure design and installation of the new Newseum, which includes two high definition television studios and control rooms, Newseum master control, 15 theaters, 14 galleries, 24,000 square feet of high tech conference space and administrative support areas in the 250,000 square foot facility.


  • Programs and Education — researches and creates original news oriented and educational live programs for Newseum visitors and school groups, including broadcast studio tours, NewsMania, Inside Media and gallery talks. The education group creates and distributes teacher guides and curricula that meet national standards of learning for visiting school groups.

Hurley established the broadcast group when he joined the Freedom Forum in 1993. The group produced numerous programs for public television and cable channels and oversaw the production of all video, electronic and interactive exhibits for both the original Newseum (1997) and the new one (2008).

Newseum productions have received dozens of awards from major film and video festivals and professional organizations, including the International Monitor Awards, the New York Film and Video Festival, Cine Golden Eagle and the International Film and Video Festival.

Hurley joined the Freedom Forum after 30 years in broadcast news. In 11 years with Gannett Co., Inc. he was news director of Gannett News Service/Television, executive editor of the nationally syndicated “USA TODAY on TV,” manager of news operations at WUSA-TV in Washington and news director at WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

Hurley was with Cox Broadcasting for 13 years as a reporter, anchor, editorial director and news director at WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio, where he received the SPJ/SDX national award for excellence in TV editorial writing and presentation. Prior to joining Cox Broadcasting, he was an anchor and reporter from WHAS-TV and radio in Louisville, Ky. And news director at several New England-area radio stations. Over the years, his news operations won numerous local, state and national awards for excellence in news coverage.

Hurley and his wife, Jackie, live in McLean, Va.
