ARLINGTON, Va. — Twenty-three young adults of color from across the country have been named Chips Quinn Scholars for spring 2001 by The Freedom Forum.

Chips Quinn Scholars are college students or recent graduates. They attend an intensive five-day orientation with veteran journalists and journalism educators at The Freedom Forum in Arlington, Va., work in 10- to 12-week paid internships at U.S. daily newspapers and receive $1,000 scholarships from The Freedom Forum upon successful completion of the internships.

This class brings to 499 the total number of young journalists trained by the program since its inception in 1991.

"Increasing diversity in newspaper newsrooms is one of The Freedom Forum's top priorities. Through the Chips Quinn Scholars program and our partnerships with editors and educators, we've now prepared hundreds of talented young people of color for work in newsrooms," said Charles L. Overby, chairman and chief executive officer of The Freedom Forum.

Beginning with a summer class of six students in 1991, the Chips Quinn Scholars program has become year-round, with fall, spring and summer sessions now reaching more than 150 young people annually. The Scholars have a Web site (www.chipsquinn.org) and a fellowship program that provides further professional development opportunities for alumni.

The program was established in 1991 in memory of John C. "Chips" Quinn Jr., son of Freedom Forum advisory trustee John C. Quinn. Chips Quinn was the managing editor of the Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) Journal. Quinn began his journalism career with newsroom internships in Huntington, W.Va., and Agana, Guam. He worked as an editor at the Statesman-Journal in Salem, Ore., and The Providence Journal in Rhode Island before moving to New York. He died in an automobile accident in 1990 at the age of 34.
